Wheatsheaf Football Team Registers Resounding And Historic Victory!

Star Date: 22/11/98 Kick-off: 10.30am Location: "Hylands@

The Combatants, The Chequers versus North Springfield a.k.a "The Wheatsheaf"

Conditions, frozen in parts with sticky patches developing > the latent heat of fusion= ?

I witnessed some late-comers hesitating by the dressing-room door. They had heard and a stream of guttural curses issuing from within. Were they trespassing on the production set of some local Repertory company' s rendering of "Rob Roy" or "Brave Heart"?

"No" I reassured them, that is merely Graeme's pre-match instructions.

The Chequers Team

The Wheatsheaf Team

The contest began and swiftly grew into a mixture of raw muscle and bone combined with adroit skill and guile.

Justin caught the eye in his sleek black gloves as he repeatedly glided o=er the sward to repel the foe=s attacks. Dave >the Irish=, deputising for >Dave the Face=, contrasted well in white be smattered cotton gloves, for safer grip; thundering across the turf like some unbridled Juggernaut steered by a >left handed clerk of high principles but intemperate practices=. Enter Roxwell John and Matt, exerting a calming force on the restless troops, cunningly drawing the best from Shippey, Wayne, Paul =Ellis= and Mark.

By half-time it became evident that this was to be a close contest. Graeme, Lee, Colin and Tony took to the field to replace flagging heroes. Repeated thrusts down the flank by the >Tank= pierced and battered the Chequers= armour. Mick and Colin were supplied with >ammo= to inflict damage on the enemy. Paul=s incursions caused panic in the opposition=s ranks. Victory was in sight and eventually achieved. Thanks lads for a great team performance, solid in defence and inventive in attack.

Final Score

Chequers 2 Wheatsheaf 3.
Zip did not score but was caught offside. Many thanks to Barry of the Chequers for making the arrangements and for providing >victuals= afterwards. Return fixture some time after Christmas.
